A Brief History of Novi Beograd Serbia
The area of Novi Belgrade had been developed as an image of Yugoslavia’s modernization after World War II. It was built on what was a big swamp, and it reflects the remarkable achievement of urban planning and resilience. It was in 1948 that all developmental activities were started as an actualization of the vision of building a modern town for the futuristic ideals of the Yugoslav federation. Today, it stands at the most rearing post-war Brutalist architecture that figured the iconic contrast to the old-world charm of Belgrade’s Old Town.

Such landmarks as the Genex Tower, the Western City Gate, one of the tallest buildings in Serbia, embody the futuristic conception of this district. It is, practically, an architecturally unlikely tribute to the social resilience and inventive modernity of the post-war era in Serbia, which continues to develop its identity to date.
