Mount Kenya University stands as one of East Africa’s most vibrant and progressive centers of higher education. With a mission to provide world-class education and a commitment to innovation, MKU has grown from a modest institution to an internationally recognized university attracting students from across Africa and beyond. Whether you are pursuing a certificate, diploma, or degree, MKU provides a conducive learning environment backed by strong academic standards, modern facilities, and a focus on research and community impact.
A Journey of Growth and Excellence
Established in 1996 as Thika Institute of Technology, MKU officially became a full-fledged university in 2008 after receiving its charter from the Kenyan government. Since then, it has expanded its footprint significantly, now boasting campuses in Thika (main campus), Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, and other key regions in Kenya. It also has a strong online and distance learning platform, enabling students to access quality education regardless of their location.
Mount Kenya University is not just a university—it is a hub of academic excellence and a symbol of transformation in higher education in Africa. With a student-centered philosophy and a commitment to inclusivity, it serves tens of thousands of students annually across its various schools and faculties.
International Recognition and Accreditation
One of the key reasons MKU is considered a premier international destination for higher education is its accreditation and recognition. It is fully accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE) in Kenya and has collaborations with universities and research institutions around the world.
MKU has developed partnerships with institutions in the United Kingdom, Germany, India, China, and the United States, among others. These partnerships facilitate student and faculty exchanges, collaborative research, and curriculum development. The university’s global connections ensure that students receive education that meets international standards and prepares them for the global job market.

MKU offers a wide range of academic programs that are carefully designed to meet the demands of modern economies and societies. These include certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs in areas such as:
