Unlike a normal ruler or scale, a depth gauge is specially made to go inside narrow spaces where other tools cannot work. For example, if a carpenter is making a groove in wood for fitting, he needs to make sure all grooves are of the same depth. Similarly, an engineer making machine parts must check that every cavity is correct. Divers also use depth gauges underwater to keep track of how deep they are, because going too deep without control can be risky.
