Pleural thickening is a medical condition that affects the pleura, the thin membrane surrounding the lungs and lining the chest cavity. It occurs when scar tissue or fibrosis causes this membrane to harden and thicken, reducing its elasticity. This condition often restricts lung expansion, leading to breathing difficulties and discomfort. Pleural thickening may develop gradually and is frequently linked to exposure to asbestos, infections, or other lung diseases.
