'Bad blood with Lee' Valverde signs new contract with Real until 2029

Valverde re-signs with Real Madrid.

"Federico Valverde has agreed to extend his contract with the club until June 30, 2029," Real Madrid announced on its official website on Monday.

According to local media, the buyout clause is worth €1 billion ($1,403.5 billion).

Valverde joined Real Madrid in 2016 and made his first-team debut in 2017 before establishing himself as a regular in the 2018-2019 season.

Valverde had a "career-high" season last season with seven goals and four assists in 34 league games (29 starts) and has been a regular in the midfield this season with one goal and two assists in 12 league games (11 starts).

Valverde was the subject of several offers from foreign clubs before last summer's transfer window. In particular, the Premier League was interested.

Valverde is considered one of the best midfielders in the world.

"I didn't pay much attention to the offers from the Premier League. "I don't mind the Premier League offers because I know I can play for Real Madrid," he says, "and if one day I don't feel like I can play for Real Madrid, then moving to another team could be an option.

There are also ties to Korean soccer. Valverde's thunderous mid-range shot from the edge of the box in the second half of the South Korea-Uruguay match in the first group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was deflected wide of the South Korean goal, and he also had a nervous tackle on Lee Kang-in in the final minute of the match.

In March of this year, Valverde wore the Uruguay captain's armband for the Korea-Uruguay friendly A match at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Valverde recorded one assist in the match, which South Korea lost 1-2 to Uruguay.

Valverde has played 220 official matches for Real Madrid, winning two Primera Liga titles, one Champions League title, and one Copa del Rey.
