“Spring volleyball, which I only watched on TV, is exciting to play” ‘Spring season’ after 7 years, two pillars of CheongKwanJang

'Seonmyung Girls' High School duo' Park Eun-jin and Jeong Ho-young are middle blockers responsible for fast attacks in the center of the court. Park Eun-jin of Team ‘Wings’, with a success rate of over 50% in the second half, “lost in the second round “The players’ confidence” Ho-young Jeong “Turns hate into cheering “It will be stronger”

Professional volleyball women's Jeong Kwan-Jang's two middle blockers, Park Eun-jin (left) and Jeong Ho-young, are striking a blocking pose at the club's practice gym in Daejeon. The two players, who are one-year seniors and juniors at Jinju Myeong Girls' High School, are determined to recreate the glory of their high school days, when they won four national championships together, on this 'spring volleyball' stage for the first time since their professional debut.

“I always felt bitter while watching ‘Spring Volleyball’ on TV. I’m excited that I can now feel the pressure of spring volleyball. “I think it will be exhilarating to be on the court.”

These are the words of Jeong Ho-young (Jeong Kwan-jang, middle blocker), who entered the postseason stage 5 seasons after his professional debut. Jeong Kwan-Jang, who failed to advance to the postseason in succession from the 2017-2018 season to last season, secured third place in the regular league this season and will enter the spring volleyball stage for the first time in seven seasons. Among the seven professional volleyball women's teams, Cheong Kwan-Jang is the only team that has suffered from a spring volleyball drought for more than six seasons.

Ho-Young Jeong was a promising player who attracted attention enough to be selected for the adult national team when he was in his third year at Gwangju Sports Middle School. In 2018, when she was a sophomore at Jinju Seonmyeong Girls' High School, she led third-year senior Park Eun-jin (middle blocker) to four national championships. When Gwanjang Jeong nominated Park Eun-jin as the second overall pick in the 2018-2019 season rookie draft and Chung Ho-young as the first overall pick in the following season, it seemed like 'spring day' was just around the corner.

However, even after the two players joined, a ticket to the postseason seemed impossible to secure. Last season, we were not invited to the ‘Spring Banquet’ because we were just one point short. Park Eun-jin, who met with Jeong Ho-young at the club's practice gym in Daejeon, said, "Ahead of this season, I promised myself, 'Let's not leave any regrets like last season.' “I will not be satisfied with advancing to spring volleyball and will prepare more firmly for the postseason game,” he said.

For a middle blocker who plays in the middle of the court, fast breaks are as important as blocking. Park Eun-jin had a fast-break success rate of only 45.2% in the first half of this season (rounds 1 to 3). Ho-Young Jeong (47.3%) also failed to exceed 50% in quick attack success rate. However, Park Eun-jin is ranked first in this category (56.3%) in the second half of the year. Ho-Young Jeong also ranked 4th in quick attack success rate (52.7%) during the same period. As the two players survived, Jeong Gwan-jang was able to break away from the attack pattern that relied on the pair of wing strikers Mega (Indonesia) and Zia (USA).

Of course, the team performance also improved. CheongKwanJang, which had 7 wins and 11 losses (24 points) in the first half, is now recording 13 wins and 3 losses (37 points) in the second half. If Cheong Kwan-Jang, who has recently won 7 games in a row, defeats Pepper Savings Bank, the lowest ranked team, in the last home game of the season on the 13th, they can tie the club's record for the longest winning streak (8 consecutive wins). Jeong Ho-young said, “In the past, there was pressure that all six players on the court had to do well to win. “Now, I have faith that even if someone is not in good condition, other team members can take their place,” he said.
